A 19-foot bronze statue of Kobe Bryant outside the LA Lakers’ Downtown Arena immortalized him

<p>On Thursday, the Los Angeles Lakers honored their late hero with a 19-foot bronze monument outside their downtown stadium in honor of Kobe Bryant.</p>

<p>The 4,000-pound monument shows Bryant leaving the floor after his 81-point outburst against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006, wearing his white No. 8 jersey and raising his right index finger.</p>
<p>During the dedication ceremony, Vanessa, the widow of Kobe Bryant, announced that three statues would be erected in his honor. Bryant is the all-time leading scorer for the Lakers and five-time NBA champion. A third monument would show Bryant with his daughter Gianna, who perished in a helicopter accident in January 2020 along with him and seven other people, and another will show Bryant in his No. 24 jersey, which he wore for the second part of his career.</p>
<p>Hundreds of season ticket holders and scores of Lakers greats were present for the event to unveil the first statue. Following statements from owner Jeanie Buss, former player Derek Fisher, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and veteran Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Vanessa Bryant spoke during the event.</p>
<p>Buss said, “I miss Kobe and Gigi more than words can express. I think of Kobe all the time.” “But I’m so happy right now.”</p>
<p>The words “Kobe Bean Bryant” are engraved on the base of the monument, behind which is his nickname, “Black Mamba.” Five identical Larry O’Brien Trophy replicas around the pedestal.</p>
<p>The box score from his 81-point performance and a remark from Bryant, “Leave the game better than you found it,” are also included on the base. And leave a legacy behind you when the time comes to part ways.</p>
<p>Throughout his career, Bryant has been recognized with a monument at Star Plaza outside of the Staples Center, making him the seventh team member and sixth player overall to receive this distinction. Alongside him are Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, and Chick Hearn, the Lakers announcer.</p>
