Wonderful to See Ashwin Right Up There, Anil Kumble Says After Off-spinner Matches His Record

Ravichandran Ashwin’s incredible performance in the second innings of the fourth Test match against England in Ranchi on Sunday saw the off-spinner tie the record for most five-wicket hauls by an Indian, something that former cricketer and head coach Anil Kumble praised.

In the fourth Test, Ashwin took 5-51 in the second innings against England and tied Kumble for 35 five-fors in the format. Following their bowling out England for 145, India had a dominating lead in the game thanks to Ashwin’s spell.

“Seeing Ashwin up there is fantastic, and I have no doubt that he will go much better. He still has a ton more India matches still to play. Because of this, I also think that there are larger expectations for someone who has had such a strong start to his Test career, Kumble said to JioCinema.

When he fails to take up wickets in two innings or two Test matches, people start focusing on his actions, form, and the reasons for his changes in certain areas. But it’s just noise, and top bowlers avoid noise like that. When India most needed Ashwin in this innings, he most definitely delivered.

After not being among the wickets in the first several games of the series, Ashwin eventually put up his finest performance of the series during the second innings.

In 15.5 overs, he took 5-51 and removed Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Ben Foakes, and James Anderson from the game.

Only a few legendary figures remain on the list of the most five-wicket hauls, including the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, who has amassed an amazing 67 fifers in 133 Test matches. The spinner from Tamil Nadu is now tied for fourth place.

With 145 Test matches played, the legendary Australian Shane Warne is a distant second with 37 five-wicket hauls. With 36 fifers from 86 games, New Zealand great Richard Hadlee finishes in third, above of Ashwin and Kumble.

Day three ended with India walking off at stumps, having amassed 40 runs off the 192-run goal without losing a wicket.
