WPL2024: The Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz want to start strong

In the first two matches of the competition, the Delhi Capitals (DC) and UP Warriorz, respectively, lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), on two cliffhangers. When these two teams play on Monday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, one of them will score a point.

With captain Harmanpreet Kaur back in the pavilion and MI needing five runs off of one ball on Friday, DC would have felt they were favorites to win. That was not to be, however, as S Sajana displayed unwavering courage to strike Alice Capsey for a six on the last ball, capping an incredible victory for the defending champions.

What: WPL 2024 Match 4 between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals

When: February 26, 2024

Where: Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium

Time: 7:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time

There were a few bright spots for the Meg Lanning-led team despite the loss, not the least of which was Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues’ batting display, which made sure DC scored a respectable amount in the first innings.

During the remainder of the competition, DC will be hoping that Arundhati Reddy’s outstanding bowling spell—which included taking out Nat Sciver-Brunt and Yastika Bhatia—is the beginning of a sustained run with the ball for her.

Death bowling has to be improved for the team before their match on Monday. It would be intriguing to see whether Lanning ends the spin overs early and trusts the pacers to do the job in the last overs.

The Warriorz would have wondered why they did not complete the game much sooner than when it finished and instead lost with five runs required off the last ball if DC had suffered a devastating defeat defending a score.

They were one over away from winning their first match of the season at 126 for 3 in 16 overs, but they were unable to pull it off. Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana had more influence in one chase over that completely changed the course of the game.

But even with the loss, Warriorz had a lot of momentum going into the following game. Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat’s batting on Saturday established the groundwork for the team to reach the finish line, while the spin combination of Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Sophie Ecclestone effectively managed the flow of runs.

Both teams, however, were unable to do that in their first two games, so they will be vying to start top of the points table on Monday.

most likely using XIs

Both teams have the option to trust the same groups that came close to winning in their first meetings and hope that the same group of players helps them over the finish line on Monday.

Delhi Capitals: Arundhati Reddy, Minnu Mani, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Alice Capsey, Jemimah Rodrigues, Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland, Arundhati Verma, and Meg Lanning (c).

UP Warriorz: Sophie Ecclestone, Shweta Sehrawat, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Khemnar, Saima Thakor, Kiran Navgire, Deepti Sharma, Tahlia McGrath, Grace Harris, and Vrinda Dinesh
